It’s easy to become dependent on caffeine. Dr. Roland Griffiths recently found that more than half of a group of subjects suffered withdrawal symptoms after giving up the caffeine in a single daily cup of strong brewed coffee or three cans of caffeinated drink! They complained of headache, fatigue, lethargy, mood changes, muscle pain, stiffness, flu like feelings, nausea, and craving for caffeine.
In extreme cases, people deprived of caffeine become “functionally impaired in normal daily activities,” finds Dr. Griffiths, “literally crippled by abstinence from caffeine.”
Interestingly, other research shows that some heavy caffeine users—used to drinking ten cups a day—who quit caffeine do not suffer any significant withdrawal consequences.
